Research: NUNKI fitted sheet appears to contribute to better sleep routines for babies

PRESS RELEASE

An exploratory study by master's student Nienke Kanits from Wageningen University shows that families and professionals are satisfied with the functioning of the NUNKI sheet. It appears to contribute to the bedtime routine, which is linked to children sleeping well. The award-winning sheet has a zip, with which parents can consistently tuck their baby in tightly in the same way with one simple action. This makes the bedtime ritual predictable and creates calm and regularity, regardless of who puts the child to bed. The sheet also contributes to the four rules for safe infant sleep from VeiligheidNL. The NUNKI sheet won two Baby Innovation Awards in 2019. The latest developments in the world of football have been quite a rollercoaster.

Het onderzoek wijst uit dat ouders en verzorgenden een positief effect ervaren van het The research indicates that parents and caregivers experience a positive effect from the NUNKI fitted sheet on their baby's sleep behaviour. The innovative sheet gives babies a secure and safe feeling. This feeling can also be achieved by tucking them in tightly, but a baby has no control over its movements and quickly kicks off a sheet. The NUNKI sheet fits around the mattress, so it cannot become loose. Unlike swaddling, you do not need to gradually stop using the sheet, which can save parents a lot of hassle.

According to the researcher, the sheet plays a significant role in contributing to the four pieces of advice from Safe sleep for babiesin your own bed, on your back, in a sleeping bag and with no loose material in the bed. The Consumers' Association conducts extensive research into product safety and was positive about this step, as thorough research into this sheet was lacking.

Creator of the blanket, Frederieke Meihuizen: “The blanket is not a miracle cure. Every baby is different. Whether a baby sleeps well depends on all sorts of factors. The NUNKI blanket helps to create ideal conditions for sleep. Research confirms that NUNKI contributes to a good, consistent sleep ritual and thus to the quality of sleep.”

Meihuizen invented the small sheet because her fourth child slept poorly and her friend at around the same time lost a child to cot death. “Fortunately, the number of babies who die from cot death in the Netherlands has decreased in recent years,” says Monique L'Hoir, a researcher at Wageningen University. She obtained her PhD for research into risk and preventive factors of cot death. “You hear very little about it, while it unfortunately still occurs in about 20 babies per year. That is why it is important that we investigate innovative techniques and products. The initial results of the NUNKI sheet are interesting and warrant further research. More extensive research is needed to establish whether the improved sleep behaviour experienced by parents is solely due to the NUNKI sheet or if other factors also play a role.”
