Silence

I was 7 months pregnant from my third child. One morning at work, I saw that my best friend Noortje had called 5 times. I’ve known her for 30 years. The kind of friend you grew up with, through thick and thin. We shared insecurities and got up to mischief together. We told each other who we had crushes on and leaned on each other through heartbreak. Sometimes it was a different boy every week.

Might as well call back, I'm in need of a cup of coffee. “Hi Noor! How are you?”, I began. “Fred, something terrible has happened. We found Kees dead in bed this morning.”

I can hardly breathe, I feel like I'm suffocating. Kees found dead in bed? Dear Kees, 7 months old. A happy baby. This can't be true. This can't. THIS CAN'T BE. I feel helpless, start crying, and can't say anything other than: “How awful! How terrible!”

The period after was difficult. I gave birth to my son Jurre. Determined to enjoy my baby, I tried to push the grief of the loss far away and somehow climb onto that pink cloud. This seemed to work. But when Jurre was 4 months old, I suddenly found out I was pregnant. It wasn't planned. I wasn't ready for this at all and I broke down. An unplanned pregnancy, the denial of Kees's loss... everything suddenly hit me ten times harder.

Fedde was different

My son Fedde was born as the youngest of four children. I had been through this process before, but with Fedde it was different. From day one, something wasn't right. Fedde was a restless baby: wide-eyed, shoulders tensed backwards, and he constantly overstretched himself. I couldn't put him down for a second, and sleeping was a nightmare.

Oculto reflujo

For the first few months, I just thought he didn't want me. That he hadn't felt welcome and that it was all my fault. Until a physiotherapist noticed that he had silent reflux. That explained his tension, he was in pain! The medication worked straight away, but his sleep pattern didn't improve. Swaddling wasn't the solution. Fedde resisted swaddling from the start and we as parents didn't like it. Now that we knew he had reflux, swaddling was no longer permitted.

Tuck in securely and snugly

Swaddling was the only way to get Fedde to settle a bit. We stood by Fedde's cot for hours with our arms alongside his little body to keep him snugly swaddled. How I wished I could have used my arms to give him love, but I needed them to keep the sheet tucked in, otherwise Fedde would kick them loose straight away. Surely there must be another way? I searched for a safe way to swaddle tightly, where your baby couldn't just kick away the sheets. I was very surprised that I couldn't find a good solution. Therefore, I went back to the drawing board myself.

NUNKI was born

I had no experience with product development, but I was determined to come up with something that would help Fedde learn to sleep. After a lot of research and testing, NUNKI was born: a sheet that goes around the mattress and can be easily fastened with a zip. At the top is a band of elastic jersey fabric that provides gentle pressure on your baby's upper body, creating a sense of security. No more fuss with loose sheets, no unsafe situations in bed, but a handy way of tucking them in snugly that finally helped Fedde settle down. Finally!

Proud of Kees' mum

My dearest friend Noortje, Kees's mum, now has two daughters: Pien and Kiki. The youngest plays the starring role in our instructional video. Our logo is based on Kees's favourite bedtime cuddly toy, and I don't need to tell you where our company name comes from. I am most proud of the fact that Noor dared to close her eyes again thanks to the NUNKI sheet. She could put her baby back in her own cot without a worry.

Little Innovator Awards

Feddekees.nl went live in November 2018, and in 2019 it won the NUNKI fitted sheet Two Baby Innovation Awards. The products are handmade in Europe. We only use high-quality fabrics. For the band, we chose a heavier jersey fabric that applies just the right amount of pressure. Over 20,000 babies are now sleeping under the innovative fitted sheet, which I invented for my youngest son Fedde and in memory of Kees.

Products I missed as a mother

In addition to the award-winning NUNKI sheet, we also have the BUNDI sleeping bag, A lovely sleeping bag with sleeves that can be zipped up. No fuss with complicated wraps, but a gentle alternative to swaddling that works with zips. Ideal for gradually weaning from swaddling: by opening the zips a little further, you allow your little one to get used to more freedom of movement in very small steps. This works much better than immediately freeing an arm. You will also find very beautiful and soft muslin cloths in our webshop. All products that I, as a mother, have missed. Fortunately, they are available now!
