My son Fedde couldn't sleep

Fedde & Kees was born out of sheer desperation. As a mother of four children, I know what it's like when your baby doesn't sleep well. My youngest son, Fedde, was a crying baby and a poor sleeper because he had silent reflux. My husband and I stood by his cot for hours. We tried everything, and I was surprised that I couldn't find a solution. So, I went back to the drawing board myself.

I had no experience with product development, but was determined to come up with something that would help Fedde learn to sleep. After much research and testing, NUNKI was born: a practical way of swaddling tightly that finally calmed Fedde.

This website went live in 2018, and in 2019 the NUNKI sheet won two Baby Innovation Awards. Now, more than 50,000 babies sleep better with Fedde&Kees. This is the short version. The whole story behind Fedde&Kees is intense and very personal. It's about my best friend, who lost her baby to cot death. And about a difficult pregnancy, the feeling of not being a good enough mother, and despair.

"Something bad has happened"

I was seven months pregnant with my third child. One morning at work, I noticed my best friend Noortje had called five times. I've known her for 30 years. We shared insecurities and got up to mischief. I decided to call her back, I was in need of a coffee break. “Hi Noor! How are you?”, I started. “Fred, something terrible has happened. We found Kees dead in bed this morning.”
