Babies are vulnerable and still need to find their place in the world. There are all sorts of baby products that help with this, but have they been tested and are they safe?

In the Netherlands, the four tips for safe sleep For babies: in their own cot, on their back, in a sleeping bag and with no loose items in the cot. These recommendations are not without reason. They aim to prevent the risk of cot death – also known as ‘Sudden Infant Death Syndrome’ (SIDS).

NUNKI contributes to the four safe sleep recommendations. Read below what experts are writing about NUNKI.

Baby blanket or baby duvet: what is safe?

There are also special sheets for sale, such as the NUNKI sheet. This sheet is specially designed to make up a cot tightly. You fold this sheet around the mattress and then secure it to the underside of the mattress with Velcro. At the top, there is a wide elastic band, but at the bottom, the sheet is less tight so that your baby's hips can still move freely. When you have put your baby in bed, you zip the sheet closed on the side. The sheet is then securely fastened. This sheet can help with a sleep routine.

NUNKI is not a sleep tunnel. In fact: NUNKI is the only safe option for babies.

A common misconception is that a sleep tunnel is suitable for babies. Experts advise against sleep tunnels until the age of 2 years.

Frequently asked questions

A sleep tunnel is slid over the mattress like a ‘cover’. Thanks to the stretchy fabric, a sleep tunnel applies deep pressure to the entire body. This provides a feeling of security and safety, making it easier to fall asleep.

Sleep sacks are not suitable for babies: the stretchy fabric along the entire length puts too much pressure on the legs, hindering hip development. Sleep sacks can also be dangerous for young children. If a child younger than 2 years ends up under a sleep sack, they are often not strong enough to push the tight cover away. Due to the thick, stretchy fabric, the child can become trapped and struggle to breathe. There is a risk of ‘rebreathing’: the carbon dioxide we exhale may not escape sufficiently, which can lead to the baby suffocating. Therefore, a sleep sack is only suitable for (older) children and adults.

No! Sleep tunnels are not recommended until the age of 2. This is due to hip development and the risk of suffocation.

The NUNKI sheet from Fedde&Kees is the only one specially developed for babies.

NUNKI only applies pressure to the upper body, giving your baby's hips the opportunity to develop properly. The sheet is light and airy, making it very suitable for summer. In winter, you can add warmth by putting your child in a sleeping bag or laying a blanket over them. Tucking them in is super simple: you place your baby in bed, stretch the fabric taut with velcro, and zip the sheet closed. Anyone can do it in seconds!
